Hey sis! I’m back again, this time with a more detailed guide on how you can become a virtual assistant with no experience. Yep. Zero experience.
Before I dive in … a little disclaimer.
Disclaimer: In the spirit of full transparency, I want to state that in this post, I might talk about some amazing products or services, but here’s the scoop: I don’t earn a single penny from any of them….yet. No compensation, nada, zero. I’m just here to share cool stuff and help you out. So, if you decide to check out any of the things I mention, remember – it’s because they’re awesome, not because I’m getting anything in return. Should this change in the future, I will provide an updated disclaimer, cool? Cool. Now, let’s dive into the good stuff! 🌟
You didn’t think I was just going to stop at giving you the top 20 business ideas for women in 2024, right? Of course not, the plan was never to just point you in the right direction, I plan on giving you a well detailed map. We must smash our 2024 goals plzzzz.
So I am breaking down the previous post on business ideas you can start from home into more indepth guides that you can easily follow.
First on the line up is “how to become a virtual assistant”. I am starting with this because, I believe it’s a low hanging fruit for most of us. If you have got a laptop and a passion for helping people get organized, you are 60% ready. I can authoritatively say this because, that was my personal experience.
Get ready, sis, I will guide you through this awesome journey step by step. No experience required – just bring your enthusiasm and let’s rock the virtual world!
Why Should You Dive into the Virtual Assistant Adventure?
1. Huge Size – The Gigantic World of Virtual Assistants
So, what’s the deal with virtual assistants, you ask? First off it’s a huge industry. I just did a quick search on fiver, and over 34,000 gigs in this category alone!

That’s like having a whole army of computer wizards supporting businesses all over the world.
So, why is it so massive? Because everyone, from big companies to solo adventurers, wants someone to just help make their work easier. Imagine a world where people get help with tasks like emails, scheduling, and more, all without being in the same office. That’s the magic of virtual assistants, and it’s a big, bustling world out there!
2. The Freedom to Work Anywhere
One super cool thing about being a virtual assistant is that you can work from anywhere – your bedroom, the kitchen, or even a treehouse! In your Sunday best or in your cozy bathrobe, whatever floats your boat really. No need for a fancy office – just your trusty computer and good internet connection.
3. You can be your own boss
Guess what? As a virtual assistant, you’re the captain of your own ship. You determine your availability. You decide when to work, take breaks, and even go on vacation. It’s like having your own little business, but without the stress of a boss breathing down your neck! It’s really up to you how much money you want to make and how much time you can dedicate to it.
Preparing for Takeoff: Free Courses for Aspiring Virtual Assistants
Let’s talk training now. It would be so wrong of me to bring you into this world so un-prepared. Requiring zero experience does not equate to having zero skills. What then would people need to pay you for? You see where I am going with this? Great. So first things first we have to get some training. Below are a couple of trainings that can help you acquire the necessary skill set to get you started on your VA journey.
Let’s start with the free ones, you know I love freebies 🙂
i. Google’s Workspace Training
Personally, I think this should be among the first things you learn because you are going to be collaborating virtually. You need a platform to do this on. Google’s G Suite is platform you want to master. Learn the ropes of Google Docs, Sheets, Google Drive and all the other cool tools.
ii. Microsoft’s Office Training Center

Become a Microsoft Office whiz with their free training. Excel, Word, PowerPoint, One Drive – you’ll conquer them all. These skills are truly essential. Microsoft has the online versions of the tools mentioned above as well as some other interesting ones.
iii. HubSpot Academy
You can survive on just offering email marketing services alone as virtual assistant. I promise you. If you want to master the art of email marketing? HubSpot Academy has your back. Learn about email campaigns, automation, and more. You’ll be the email ninja everyone needs!
iv. Canva Design School

Unleash your creative side with Canva’s Design School. Learn to create eye-catching graphics and visuals. Your clients will think you’re a design wizard!
There are some more collaborative tools like slack, trello and Asana. I am happy to create tutorial/ step-by-step guide on these as well if you are interested. Simply let me know by leaving a comment in the section below.
Powering Up: Paid Courses for Serious Virtual Assistants
Now with free courses, you know there are some limitations. With the courses listed above, you are acquiring individual skillsets which when put together, makes you awesome. But to become an even more awesome virtual assistant, its important that you explore tailored trainings and courses on offering virtual assistant services.

Do You Need a Virtual Assistant Certification?
Here’s the lowdown – you don’t necessarily need a virtual assistant certification to rock this gig. Clients care more about your skills and what you can do for them. I certainly was not asked to submit one when I got my first gig as virtual assistant.
My client was more focused on my availability, my ability to deliver what was agreed upon and the quality of work done. That’s it. Like I said, this is from a personal experience. Some other’s experience might differ slightly or greatly from mine.
 Virtual Assistant Duties
The list below is by no means exhaustive but I have listed a couple of tasks that may be required of a virtual assistant. Please note that the kind of tasks depends a great deal on the sort of business run and the kind of tasks they need help with. What I have seen happen is that monotonous tasks like calls, content outreach research tend to be outsourced to VAs.
a. Email Management
Become an email expert! Manage inboxes, organize emails, forward them to where they need to go, respond to requests for guest posts, appearances etc and ensure nothing gets lost in the Bermuda Triangle of most generic mail boxes. You know…the ones that have info@ xxx .com or hello@xxxx. com.
Sometimes, these emails drop every minute and you need to be to efficiently deal with them as they come in or you might end up with a huge pile on by the end of the day. This will not look good for your KPIs.
b. Schedule Sorcery
Wave your scheduling wand! Set up meetings, appointments, and make sure your client is always where they need to be – virtually, of course. If you are a VA to a youtube content creator or a podcast host some of your tasks might include scheduling guests for appearances. Not to scare you but the more high profile the guest, the more efficient you have to be. Just saying.
c. Social Media Management
Become a social media guru! Schedule posts, engage with followers, and make your client’s online presence shine brighter than a shooting star. With the algorithms constantly changing and instagram competing with tik tok and twitter at the same time, it’s getting harder to keep up with all the new features. A business or a busy individual will certainly need a professional to take it off their hands. This is where you shine.
d. Research Jedi
Dive into the depths of the internet! Research competitors, trends, keywords, or anything your client needs. You’re the virtual Sherlock Holmes!
e. Customer Service Champion
Be the voice of your client! Answer inquiries, resolve issues, and keep their customers happy. You are more or less, the first contact for the business.
The Pot of Gold: Virtual Assistant Pay
Setting Your Virtual Worth
I love money so let’s talk pay. The golden question – how much can you earn as a virtual assistant? The real answer is that there is no fixed rate, it varies. Some start with $10-25 per hour, while experienced VAs can make $50 or more! It all depends on your skills, services, the individual or company’s budget and how awesome you are. The trick is not to sell yourself short or price your self out of the market. Remember you are just getting started and you need to build up a resume of clients.
Getting Paid Like a Pro
Platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, and Freelancer can be your virtual marketplace. Create a killer profile, showcase your skills, and let the clients come to you.
Negotiating your pay
When it comes to pay, be a ninja negotiator. Know your worth, highlight your skills, and don’t be afraid to ask for what you deserve. You’re not just a virtual assistant; you’re a virtual superstar!
