D- Prize Grant
D -Prize is a nonprofit organization that provides seed funding to organizations pioneered by entrepreneurs in low- and middle-income countries with little to no start up funds. D-Prize is a blend of social entrepreneurs all over sub-Saharan Africa & startup builders in the San Francisco Bay.
Over the years, they have provided life enhancing products and services to 11 million people across the globe through the various programmes they offer and the organizations that have been recipients of their philanthropic seed supports.
These organizations identify various challenges that stem from poverty and offer health, education and other evidence-based interventions to tackle these challenges.
In 2024, D-Prize Global is set to empower entrepreneurs that can create and promote strategies of distributing solutions to those that need them.
Some of the identified challenges includes, but are not limited to :
1. Health
- Self– Injectable Contraceptive Challenge: Apply if you are capable of distributing self -injectable contraceptives, to underserved women through a private health network.
- Oxygen Challenge – Can you develop a team of technicians to service and repair existing oxygen to improve access to medical oxygen?
- Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission Challenge – Apply if your organization can counsel and persuade HIV-positive pregnant women to follow their ART regimen in order to avoid mother-to-child HIV transmission.
- Child Immunization Challenge – Are you able to provide motivate caregivers to bring their infants to health facilities for routine vaccines that would not otherwise happen?
- Patient Identification Challenge – Can you develop a way to identify patients that needs extensive care for cervical cancer, obstetric fistula, and other conditions, and then connect them with the right management team?
- “Sugar Daddy Awareness” – Can you teach “sugar daddy awareness'” in 8th grade classrooms to minimize unplanned adolescent pregnancies and HIV infections?
2. Water
- Clean Access to Water Challenge – Apply if you have got some great ideas on how to sell ceramic water filters to people in areas without access to clean water.
3. Agriculture
- Quality Inputs Challenge – This is for organizations that can provide smallholder farmers high-quality inputs and training proven to increase their harvests.
- Post-Harvest Support Challenge – Can you provide smallholder farmers post-harvest loans and storage technology proven to increase their incomes?
- Propose Your Own Agriculture Challenge – Â D-Prize is specifically interested in distributing proven agriculture interventions to smallholder farmers. If you know of a highly-effective intervention that is backed by credible evidence, we want to hear what it is and see your plan to increase its distribution.
- Propose Your Own Livestock Challenge –Â D-Prize is interested in distributing proven livestock interventions to smallholder farmers. If you know of a highly-effective intervention backed by credible evidence, we want to hear what it is and see your plan to increase its distribution.
4. Energy
- Solar Lamp Challenge – Can you sell pico solar lamps to rural or slum -dwelling households without access to electricity.
5. EDUCATION
- Teaching At The Right Challenge – Can you implement an effective TaRL program to teach students in a resource – limited classroom?
6. LIVELIHOODS
- Reading Glasses Challenge – Apply if your organization can distribute non-prescription reading/working glasses to those in need.
- Poverty Graduation Challenge – Can you offer business coaching, capital, and social support to lift people out of ultra poverty?
All applicants are expected to propose an agricultural, health, educational, or energy challenge that will provide strategies and channels in distributing proven poverty solutions in these communities.
D-Prize Grant Eligibility
- You must be a new entrepreneur, as the recipients of D-Prize Global competition are new organizations that are sourcing funding.
- You must a citizen of low- or middle-income country.
- Existing organizations may only be considered if the core focus is distributing an existing and evidence -based poverty intervention
- If your organization is less than 18 months of full-time operations or have raised less than $30,000USD in outside funding.
D-Prize Grant Application Deadline
The global competition kicksoff on 6th May 2024.
 – Early submission Deadline: 23 June 2024 at midnight PT (Pacific Time).
 – Regular Submission Deadline: 14 July 2024 at midnight PT (Pacific Time).
 – Extension Deadline: 4 August 2024 at midnight PT (Pacific Time).
D-Prize Grant Award
Winners are awarded $20,000 USD .
D-Prize Grant Evaluation Stages
Round 1: You are expected to submit a two -page concept note and resume(s). Typically, 2500+ submissions are received per competition.
Round 2: 5% of the entrepreneurs that make it to the top list will be invited to provide answers to some written questions. Submission should not exceed two weeks.
Final Round: Shortlisted entrepreneurs will undergo series of interviews – via phone , and email.
$20,000 will be awarded to the winners.
